The
Kitchen
Local
materials are used throughout the house. White pine from a local
sawmill is the predominate wood. It was used to build the raised
panel cabinets, the built-in pantry, a cooking utensil center and
to make all the trim on the windows and doors. Into the surface
of the wood is rubbed a combination stain/polyurethane finish to
give it an aged, durable and blemish-free finish. The counter is
made of wire sawn granite from a local quarry inlaid with a Kohler
white double-bowl porcelain sink.
The table
and chairs were built by a local furniture maker who specializes
in shaker-inspired designs.
The stained
glass that you see throughout the house was created by an artist
who was a member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen. Stained
glass is not a characteristically Shaker feature, but adds a unique
domestic touch reflecting the personality of the home's occupants.
I like to view the Shaker trim as a base upon which the homeowners
can add their own personal touches.
